With the launch of Wiki Spiral, it’s only appropriate that I view the page about websites. As we are all aware, the World Wide Web was started in 1990 and opened to the public in 1993. Prior to that, it was gopher to retrieve information. And it was all text. I remember using gopher way back when I was in third grade. We used Apple IIe computers at school, and our computer teacher urged us all to invest in modems. First off our pocket money went to buying soda and candy, second we had no idea what a modem was.
The most interesting thing to come out of this article, was the fact that the biggest controversy is about the spelling of the word website. Merriam-Webster and the Chicago Manual of Style all list it as two words with the first being capitalized: Web site. Wikipedia lists it as one word: website, so that’s what I’m going with. Canada agrees, and I’m inclined to agree. Who could forget the War of 1812?
